Part search (advanced)

This procedure covers searching for parts using the SEARCH > Parts Search menu option.

  1. Using the toolbar (Meganav), click SEARCHParts Search
    OR
Click Parts (Parts button) in the left navigation pane.
  1. Type the desired search term in the Enter Part Number box.
The Boolean Or (in any letter case combination) is supported for all search types, except Part # Contains. Part # Contains supports a maximum of 85 characters.
Type OR (in any letter case combination), or type the following ASCII character: | between your search terms. For example, lm339n OR lm311 | lm339n/nopb. You can search for up to 25 part numbers at once.
  1. Select from the following options:
  2. Part # Starts With - returns part numbers that start with the search term. An example of search results for ‘lm339n’ returns matching part numbers such as 'LM339N1', and 'LM339N-500'. Type-ahead functionality is enabled, and you can search for up to 25 parts using the Boolean OR operator between search terms.

Part # Contains - returns part numbers that contain the search term. An example of search results for 'bp101ah' returns matching part numbers such as '05007-BP101AHU-T', '05006-BP101AHULB', and '03028-BP101AHM-I'. The search term must contain at least four alphanumeric characters. Special characters are automatically ignored for this type of search. Type-ahead functionality is not available, nor is the Boolean OR term, and the search field supports a maximum of 85 characters.

    Exact Part # - returns part numbers that match the full search term, exactly as entered. For example, '2n2222ab-1' matches '2N2222AB-1'. Select whether to ignore special characters (~ $ ` ' @ % ^ & ( ) - _ = { } \ [ ] : ; < > / " ? .). Commas (,) and number characters (#) are not considered special characters in this instance, as they are often found in part numbers.
When you type at least three characters, a drop-down panel appears that provides up to five items that match your search criteria. Mouse over or use the arrow keys to highlight an item in the list, and then click or press Enter to post it to the Search box. This type-ahead functionality is only enabled if Ignore Special Characters is checked. You can search for up to 25 parts using the Boolean OR operator between search terms.

Keyword Search - returns matches found in an item’s description.
    Keyword search options are:
    All (all search terms entered must be found in item descriptions);
    Any (any of the search terms found in item descriptions return results);
Exact (only the exact search term entered and found in an item's description returns a result).

For example, a search using the "Any" operator for 'ddr3 memory' returns matches such as 'MEMORY SOCKET FOR DDR3 SO-DIMM'. The search term must contain at least four alphanumeric characters. Special characters are ignored for this type of search. Type-ahead functionality is not available.

ObjectID - returns parts with a matching unique part ID. The ObjectID is a unique identifier for a part record. The ObjectID appears in the Part Details window, and in some exports and reports. Search for up to 25 ObjectIDs using the Boolean OR operator between ObjectIDs. Only numeric characters are supported as search terms. Wildcard, alphabetic, and special characters are not supported. This option must be enabled on the Settings (Settings button) > Search settings page in order to appear in the Search drop-down.

CPL Search - searches across the corporate part number, corporate manufacturer name, corporate part description, manufacturer part number, manufacturer name, and manufacturer part description.
This search is only available if a CPL is loaded in your BOM Intelligence vault.

Clear All - reverts to the defaults set in Preferences.

Manufacturer Name - type a Manufacturer name to limit the parts to search by manufacturer ( BOM Intelligence suggests manufacturer names that match what you type after you type one or more characters). Matches cease to appear in the drop-down list when you type terms that do not exist in the database and the term cannot be added to your search. Click the desired manufacturer name in the drop-down list, and then click Add to search for more than one manufacturer. Search for up to nine manufacturer names using the above process.

Part Status - select from one of the three types of statuses: Active; EOL; NRFND.

Compliance - for each of the regional compliance options —REACH, EU RoHS, China RoHS— select whether a certain compliance is required. Select ANY to indicate that no compliance indicators filter the search results.

Qualifications - specify whether parts comply with the global standard from the Automotive Electronics Council that defines stress resistance for passive electronic components, or with the Defense Logistics Agency criteria.

Temperature Grade - select from the following operating grade temperatures:

Item Min Operating Temp Max Operating Temp
Military ≤ -55°C ≥ 125°C
Automotive -40 to -54°C ≥ 125°C
Industrial -40 to -54°C 85 to 124°C
Commercial ≤ 0°C ≤ 70°C
Commercial Extended Extended commercial temperatures.
Other Other operating temperatures.

CPL - specify whether the search results match parts in the CPL.

Haystack - search Haystack.

  1. Click Search to the right of the search criteria box.

If your part search fails to uncover results, a fuzzy part match is automatically initiated.

Fuzzy part matching removes characters from either end of the search string one at a time until a match is found. Only 20% of the characters in the string are removed, after which it is assumed that search results will not be relevant. Therefore, it is recommended that you type as many valid characters in your search string as possible so that the fuzzy search comes up with a valid match.

Results appear in the search results pane.

If the fuzzy search fails to uncover results, the data grid displays No Rows to Show.

Where the fuzzy search locates a match, the results appear in the data grid, the string that resulted in the successful match appears in the Part Number field, and the active radio button is Part Number Contains.

If searching for ObjectIDs and a match is not found (for example, if a part's ObjectID was deleted) BOM Intelligence prompts you to do an automatic search for a replacement ObjectID.

  1. Select one or more rows in the data grid and then select from the options detailed in the list below.
Click for details on working with the data grid.
